The Post

The college is committed to its range of provision for students with learning difficulties who need additional learning support in the classroom or workshops or on a one to one basis.

We are seeking to appoint a team of Skills for Life Co-educators who will work across the college and be based within the appropriate team.

You will need to be pro-active, enthusiastic, flexible and interested in ensuring that all learners reach their individual learning goals.

Job Description

The post holder will be responsible to the team leader for Learning Development for the following duties:

• Supporting learners to achieve their individual learning targets within a framework of mutual respect
• Assisting learners in classroom based and practical activities, including the use of information technology
• Assisting learners with class work, written or practical as appropriate to the activity including help with research material, portfolio building etc.
• Acting as an invigilator or amanuensis during examinations as required
• Undertaking as directed, supervision of classroom activity if the lecturer is unavoidably absent
• Assisting in the preparation, upkeep and organisation, as directed, of resources and learner’s records
• Attending and contributing to course team meetings and curriculum development
• Communicating regularly with the learning support co-ordinator
• Assisting with off site visits as required

Other duties

The post holder may be required to perform duties other than those given in the job description. The particular duties and responsibilities attached to the post may vary from time to time without changing the general character of the duties or the level of responsibility entailed. Such variations are a common occurrence and would not themselves justify the re-evaluation of the post.

Person specification

Essential

A level 2 qualification in both literacy and numeracy or a willingness to work towards: -
A pro-active approach which demonstrates drive and initiative
Ability to work as a cohesive and committed team member
Ability to manage a varied workload
A commitment to own professional development and participation in staff development activities

Desirable

Experience of working in an educational environment, assisting people with learning disabilities

*Certificate in Adult Literacy or Numeracy support Level 3

Great Yarmouth College Support Staff Conditions of Service.

Hours of work

To be agreed for 36 weeks.

Salary

£14,986 to £15,981 pro rata
(* Access to point 18 (£16,249) is dependant on the
achievement of specialist qualification (see above) and
experience.

The Appointment Process

The college’s policy on appointment is to select for the final appointment process those applicants who demonstrate that they meet the person specification set out above. The final appointment process will be an interview followed by a skills test in literacy and numeracy. This is not to exclude anyone at this stage, but to identify if any support or training needs are required. Opportunities will be available to improve literacy and numeracy skills as appropriate to the successful candidate.
